Europe eSIM Guide: One Plan for Every Country

How a Europe eSIM works on multi-country trips: coverage, the UK and Switzerland, how much data you need and when a single-country plan is cheaper.

A rail pass through Paris, Rome and Barcelona. A road trip from Munich to Vienna to Prague. Europe is made for crossing borders, and a regional eSIM lets your data follow you without switching SIMs every time you change country.

How a Europe eSIM works

A regional eSIM is one data plan that works in many countries. When you cross a border, your phone simply attaches to a partner network in the next country. There's nothing to reinstall, and your data balance carries on.

  • One QR code for the whole trip.
  • One data balance shared across all covered countries.
  • No surprise roaming charges when your train crosses a border at night.

"Roam like at home" doesn't apply to most visitors

Inside the EU, people with an EU mobile plan can roam at no extra cost. If your SIM is from outside the EU, for example the US, Turkey, Canada or Australia, those rules don't protect you, and your home carrier charges its own international rates. That's exactly the gap a Europe eSIM fills.

Watch out for the UK and Switzerland

The UK and Switzerland are not in the EU, and some regional plans treat them differently. Many Europe plans do include them, but always check the country list on the plan page before you buy if your route goes through London, Zurich or the Alps. The same goes for non-EU countries such as Turkey, Serbia or Albania.

How much data for a European trip?

City breaks are data-light: maps, transport apps, restaurant searches and messaging. Most travelers do well with 5–10 GB for two weeks. If you're working remotely, using your phone as a hotspot or posting lots of video, go for 20 GB or more. Our data usage guide has a full breakdown.

Tips for a smooth trip

  1. Install before you fly and enable data roaming on the eSIM line when you land.
  2. Download train and transit apps (SNCF Connect, Trenitalia, Renfe, DB Navigator) on Wi-Fi first. They're large.
  3. Expect weaker signal in mountain tunnels and on some rural trains. It returns once you're out.
  4. Keep your home line's data roaming off for the whole trip.

Popular stops: France, Spain, Germany and Italy, or cover them all at once with a Europe eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Europe eSIM work in the UK and Switzerland?

Many Europe plans include them, but not all. Check the country list on the plan page before you buy if your trip includes the UK or Switzerland.

Do I need a new eSIM for each country in Europe?

No. A regional Europe eSIM connects automatically when you cross a border, using the same data balance.
